Say you bought a five hundred dollar gun and played with it every other weekend for a year: broken down, that would cost 20$ a game, just for the gun. Twice the cost of admission at Desert Fox MOUT field. It’s also only if your gun doesn’t break and you play with it every time. The more you consider it, the less you’ll want to spend money on equipment and the more you’ll want to save it for the other costs. (I’m sure I’ve spent over 400$ on entrance fees and event registrations alone, not even considering the cost of bb’s)
My friends have played only 10 times since paying for the total cost of their loadouts, as they can hardly afford to actually play anymore. That's 70$ a game for equipment only. Imagine paying 100$ just for a regular pick-up game? That's exactly what some players do.
But if you’re on a budget, you don't have to be deprived of essential equipment: consider buying used to save money. However, on major purchases, make sure you are buying from a friend or otherwise reputable seller, because people might sell you used guns with switched out (cheap) internals or they can be near breaking point / a lemon.
I bought a brand-new 210$ AEG for 150$ from a friend; 4 metal hi-cap mags for 20$ from another friend; 2 marpat bdu’s for 3$ each at a yard sale; 2 camo camelbacks for 10$ at a yard sale; a pair of 70$ military issue boots, in brand-new condition, for 5$ at a thrift store; and a brand-new military issue 150$ pair of Oakley sunglasses, with alternate lenses and a case, for 50$ from a friend.
All my equipment (excluding gifts), which I got in like-new or brand-new condition, cost me about 240$ but is worth 670$.

I kinda wanna stress making sure you know what you're buying. I recently bought an ICS m4 that I later learned needed quite a bit of work. It wasn't a lemon; it was just really old. Oh well, I get a new project gun to work on.
